A Kebtah Graduation

By Elder Unaui Maktitaoui

A NEW GROUP of Kem in the San Diego area have ended a year of studies. We have six new M’TAM Initiates who will become Hat-Tenee. We have six new human beings that have returned to remember the teachings of their ancestors. The Earth Center, a non-profit traditional Kemetic organization from West Merita (Africa) Dogon Priests, has added six more members to its family; one more generation called Nehesu. They have become the Divine Watchers, which is what their generational surname means.

The eleventh generation of the M’TAM Schools. Clockwise from top left: Shepzi Nehesu, Hemau Nehesu, Temaikiu Nehesu, Sheritptah Nehesu, Nemaii Nehesu, Muiba Nehesu & Instructor Herpw Bikbaye Inejnema (center). The Nehesu generation joins a worldwide community who have committed themselves to upholding the rigid standards of the Kem, the entity that fits perfectly into the Divine Order.

It is an honor to present to you the 11th generation of the Earth Center, beginning with each person’s given name and definition:

Muiba Nehesu is the flowing soul – with certification as an Imasha Adjed

Shepzi Nehesu is a person of nobility – with certification as an Imasha Adjed

Nemaii Nehesu is to bloom afresh, to be new – with certifications as an Imasha Adjed and a Sounu Adjed

Sheritptah Nehesu is the dwelling place of Ptah – with certifications as an Imasha Adjed and level 1 of Per Ankh

Temaikiu Nehesu is to gather what has been lost – with certifications as an Imasha Adjed, a Sounu Adjed and level 1 of Per Ankh

Hemau Nehesu is to rise up – with certifications as an Imasha Adjed, a Sounu Adjed and level 1 of Per Ankh
These graduates, have completed the first part of their responsibility to their ancestors, themselves and to their family. Now the fun continues and also the work. The year they’ve spent learning, until this graduation, increased their knowledge of what it is to be a Kem. As a Kem, “the type of person they now strive to be on earth – constantly aware of the role they play in their surroundings”, they can now rightfully be called representatives of their ancestors here on Earth. That in itself is a big responsibility which comes with the first level of their remembrance and knowledge. As a generation and as individuals, it is now up to them to support the sacredness of these teachings.

Within this old traditional system they have become Hat-Tenee. Now, they are responsible to oversee, assist and guide the new brothers and sisters who are just starting their education. It is for these graduates to now remember that, the next new generation will look up to them; they have become an example to them. We at M’Tam are mirrors of each other. We learn from each other. May these graduates remember that even though they now have in their possession a certificate attesting to a level of competency in M’TAM, that we are all still students on the road to perfection. This process is a constant continuation of getting closer to the traditional way of life.

During the ceremony Nehez Meniooh (left), the Merr of The Earth Center Chicago presents each of the initiates the meaning of their spiritual names. From left to right: Muiba Nehesu, Shepzi Nehesu, Nemaii Nehesu, Sheritptah Nehesu, Temaikiu Nehesu, and Hemau Nehesu. The Nehesu generation becomes the eleventh generation to graduate since the start of The Earth Center Schools. They will now begin training to teach, and thereby spread the M’TAM knowledge they have been privileged to receive.

Humility is the key to our growth. Today, they know some of the teaching because it has been imparted to them, but there is still much more to learn. At this point in their development as a Kem, the bar is set higher regarding listening, observing, integrating and learning by going further within and showing a level of growth through the refinement of their actions and behavior. Disappointments and mistakes are also part of this growth. They must use them as an inspiration to become better human beings who constantly strive to be like the Neteru (Gods/Divine Beings)…that is the challenge.

In this journey, gratefulness is a very important ingredient to appreciate the little steps taken in becoming a Kem. Being disappointed, happy, wise, frustrated, unhealthy, healthy, understanding and impatient, etc., are all parts of this journey. After all, we are only humans who have decided to grow and to face the challenges that are, after all, part of living on this revered and loved Mother Earth.

May this group meditate on being “Divine Watchers”, may they discern what that appellation means to them. May they keep the ties of friendliness that have developed over this last year. Call each other; be watchful for the growth, behavior and actions of each other. Remember that unity brings strength. As a generation, the Nehesu become another pillar in the structure of the Earth Center. May they make time to contribute to the goals of the institution that has given them the opportunity to continue growing stronger in a traditional way of life. May they keep asking questions, keep having doubts, keep researching; all of these are contributions on the journey that all of us are taking together.

To the Nehesu generation, I offer this advice: Look back and be thankful of where you are now as a human being. Make an inventory of what you have acquired and is important to you. It is a blessing to be able to let go of that which is not contributing to you as a person and hold onto that which has.

This is what we do at The Earth Center schools. We do not allow students to identify themselves with those parts that hold them down. We know that in this world there are many things that we have been exposed to that hinder our growth, we are no more these things then the clothes we have worn in the past and thrown away. We hope that all of those who are honestly seeking a way out of the oppression that the clothes of materialism and spiritual ignorance weigh you down with, find the path to M’TAM.

We at the Earth Center wish to thank the Nehesu generation for making us participants in their evolution; in their spiritual, physical, emotional and mental growth. May they always remember that they are not alone; Reach out to any one of us at any time. As Divine Watchers, Nehesu, we want to trust your seeing eyes. Let us grow, have fun, and respect each other together as a family.

“May the ancestors put good things in your Yen Cabili and may the Gods give their approval.“
